Grain-free is kind of our thing — it’s how we make every Wholly Balls! bite. If you want the full technique, see our clean protein balls recipe; this is the no-oat, paleo-friendly version.

What Makes an Energy Ball Grain-Free (and Paleo)?

  • No oats or grains — almond flour and coconut do the work instead.
  • Real-food binders — nut butter, ground flax, a little honey or maple.
  • No refined sugar or dairy — sweeten with honey/maple, use cacao nibs or clean dark chocolate.
  • Nothing artificial — if you can’t pronounce it, it doesn’t go in.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup almond flour
  • ½ cup natural almond or peanut butter
  • ¼ cup ground flaxseed
  • ½ cup unsweetened shredded coconut
  • 3 tbsp honey or pure maple syrup
  • ⅓ cup dark chocolate chips (or cacao nibs for stricter paleo)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • A splash of warm water, only if the mix feels dry

How to Make Grain-Free Energy Balls

  1. Mix the base. Stir the nut butter, honey, and vanilla until smooth.
  2. Add the dry stuff. Almond flour, flax, coconut, and salt — stir into a thick dough.
  3. Fold in the chocolate or cacao nibs.
  4. Adjust & chill. Too dry? A splash of warm water. Chill 20–30 minutes so they roll clean.
  5. Roll into ~15 balls. About a tablespoon each.
Strict paleo? Use cacao nibs or 85%+ dark chocolate, and stick with honey or maple as your sweetener. Skip any protein powder that isn’t paleo-friendly.

Easy Variations

  • Cinnamon almond: add 1 tsp cinnamon (tastes like our El Churrito).
  • Double chocolate: add 1 tbsp cacao powder to the dough.
  • Lemon coconut: add lemon zest + extra shredded coconut.
Grain-free is our whole lane. Most “healthy” protein balls are built on oats. Every Wholly Balls! bite is grain-free by design — same crave-worthy chew, cleaner label. If you’d rather skip the bowl, we’ve got you.

Storage

  • Fridge: airtight, up to 1 week.
  • Freezer: up to 3 months — freeze on a tray, then bag.
