Good news: Wholly Balls! are already plant-based, so this is basically how we think about a protein ball. Want the master method? Here’s our clean protein balls recipe — below is the fully vegan version.

How to Make Protein Balls Vegan

Two easy swaps take any protein ball vegan:

  • Maple syrup (or dates) instead of honey — honey isn’t vegan.
  • A plant-based protein powder — pea, hemp, brown rice, or a blend.
  • Dairy-free chocolate — check the label; plenty of dark chocolate is naturally vegan.
  • Nut or seed butter for binding and healthy fats (already vegan).

Ingredients

  • 1 cup natural peanut or almond butter
  • ½ cup plant-based protein powder (vanilla or chocolate)
  • ½ cup ground flaxseed
  • 3 tbsp maple syrup
  • ⅓ cup dairy-free dark chocolate chips
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • A splash of warm water, only if the mix feels dry

How to Make Vegan Protein Balls

  1. Cream it. Stir the nut butter, maple syrup, and vanilla until smooth.
  2. Add the dry stuff. Plant protein powder, flax, and salt — stir to a thick dough.
  3. Fold in the dairy-free chocolate.
  4. Adjust & chill. A splash of warm water if dry; chill 20–30 minutes.
  5. Roll into ~16 balls.
Vegan chocolate tip: Most 70%+ dark chocolate is dairy-free, but always scan for milk fat or milk solids. Cacao nibs are a safe, no-sugar option.

Easy Variations

  • Mocha: add 1 tsp instant espresso (hi, Loca-Mocha fans).
  • Chocolate: chocolate plant protein + 1 tbsp cacao.
  • Date-sweetened: skip the maple and blend in ¾ cup dates — see our bliss balls.
Plant-based, by design. Every Wholly Balls! flavor is plant-based — real ingredients, no dairy, no junk. If you want the vegan snack without the mixing, we make six of them. (Heads up: they contain peanuts and tree nuts.)

Storage

  • Fridge: airtight, up to 1 week.
  • Freezer: up to 3 months.

Vegan Protein Balls FAQ

Are protein balls vegan?

Only if they skip honey and use a plant protein + dairy-free chocolate. Many aren’t — check the label, or make this recipe.

What’s the best vegan protein powder for these?

A pea or pea-hemp blend gives the best texture and a neutral taste. Brown rice protein works too.

Can I make them without protein powder?

Yes — use ½ cup almond flour or extra flax instead. Still plant-based, just a little less protein.
